Calabria launches compensation scheme for fishing and aquaculture firms

The Regional Government of Calabria has opened a compensation programme for micro, small and medium enterprises in the fishing and aquaculture sectors. The scheme, part of the National FEAMPA 2021‑2027 programme (Specific Objective 2.2, Action 5, Operation 31 “Compensation”), is funded under EU Execution Decision 2026/889, which recognised the market disruption caused by the Middle‑East conflict as an exceptional event.

The compensation aims to cover additional production costs incurred between 28 February and 31 December 2026 due to supply‑chain disturbances. Applications are accepted until 16:00 on 3 September 2026. Regional Agriculture Assessor Gianluca Gallo said the measure is intended to preserve the competitiveness and continuity of the sector.

The EU Commission’s decision enables the regional authority to grant financial indemnities to eligible fishing vessel owners and aquaculture businesses affected by the conflict‑related price spikes.
