Calabria marine project concludes in Praia a Mare

The Mare Dentro project, promoted by the Ente per i Parchi Marini Regionali della Calabria, has concluded its final stage in Praia a Mare at Isola Dino. The initiative utilized the vessel MAVISU, a boat previously seized from human traffickers and repurposed as a symbol of legality and environmental protection, to travel through various Calabrian coastal locations.

The project aimed to increase awareness regarding the six Regional Marine Parks and 28 Special Conservation Zones managed by the agency. During the concluding event, Professor Roberto Danovaro highlighted the unique geological structure of the Calabrian seabed, describing the region as a “mountain in the middle of the sea” where deep ecosystems exist in close proximity to the coast.

Discussions emphasized the strategic importance of deep-sea research for protecting biodiversity, managing potential energy resources, and securing essential infrastructure like submarine cables, while advocating for scientific knowledge to prevent unregulated economic exploitation of the seabed.
