Calabria promotes slow tourism and cultural heritage

The Calabria region is shifting its tourism focus toward ‘slow tourism’ to extend the travel season beyond the summer months. This strategy emphasizes hiking trails, cycling routes, and the exploration of historic villages to showcase the region's natural and cultural assets, such as the Sila mountains.

A forum titled ‘The future of tourism is slow’ is scheduled for October 9 at Agriturismo Costantino in Maida to discuss these new directions with regional administrators and tourism operators.

Additionally, the region maintains unique linguistic and cultural heritage, notably in Guardia Piemontese. As the only location in Southern Italy where the Occitan language is still spoken, the town serves as a testament to the history of the Waldensians, who migrated from Piedmont to Calabria in the 12th century. Visitors can explore this history through local textile laboratories, the House of Culture, and the Waldensian trails connecting the town to the hinterland.
