Calabria Region appeals to Council of State over statute referendum

The Calabria Region has filed an appeal with the Council of State to challenge a ruling by the TAR Calabria regarding a planned referendum on changes to the regional statute. The regional administration is contesting a decision that declared its previous attempt to block the referendum inadmissible due to a lack of jurisdiction.

The referendum, which was requested by seven regional councilors, concerns amendments to the regional statute approved in early 2026. Key changes include the introduction of up to two undersecretaries to the Presidency of the Junta and modifications to the composition of the regional executive. While undersecretaries may attend meetings, they will not have voting rights.

Unless further judicial developments occur, the vote is currently scheduled for November 29, 2026. The regional president, Roberto Occhiuto, had previously deferred the decision on legal action to the regional legal department.
