Calabria Regional Council repeals law on executive expansion
The Calabria Regional Council has approved a law to repeal recent amendments to the regional statute, effectively canceling a plan to expand the executive branch. The previous legislation, introduced in March, would have increased the number of regional assessors from seven to nine and allowed for the appointment of up to two undersecretaries to the Presidency.
By repealing these changes, the Council has also suspended a confirmatory referendum on the statutory modifications that was scheduled for November 29. Proponents of the repeal cited the need to protect public resources, noting that the referendum would have cost approximately 7 million euros.
The decision has sparked political tension. Opposition members criticized the move as a tactic to neutralize political debate and avoid a public vote, while members of the majority described it as an act of common sense regarding fiscal responsibility. Legal proceedings regarding the referendum remain ongoing, with a hearing at the Council of State scheduled for late October and November.
