Calabria reports 41% decrease in forest fires

The Calabria Regional Council held a joint session between its Special Oversight Commission and the Commission against the 'ndrangheta, corruption, and widespread illegality to review forest fire prevention systems. Officials reported that in 2026, the number of forest fires in the region decreased by 41% compared to the 2015-2024 average, while the total area affected by fire fell by 14%.

This regional improvement occurs despite a 36% increase in fires recorded at the national level in Italy. The regional strategy has shifted toward a zero-tolerance approach focused on prevention and deterrence, notably through the use of specialized drone pilots to monitor territory and discourage illegal activities.

During the hearings, representatives from the Regional Civil Protection, the Department of Forests and Soil Defense, and the company Calabria Verde discussed the coordination of professional networks required to safeguard the territory and mitigate risks associated with environmental mismanagement and organized crime.
