Calabria truck drivers extend protest until October 27
Trucking organization Fedralog has confirmed that the transport strike in Calabria will continue until October 27. This decision follows a meeting at a protest site near the Lamezia Terme airport, where representatives determined that current government measures are insufficient.
Protesters are seeking concrete guarantees and binding commitments from the government regarding rising fuel costs. While the government has proposed an economic support package valued at up to 1 billion euros—with 480 million euros made immediately available—transportation representatives argue these are not new funds. They claim the resources primarily involve funds already allocated for 2025 rather than additional support.
The ongoing mobilization, which includes checkpoints at the Gioia Tauro motorway junction, is causing significant logistical disruptions. The fruit and vegetable sector is facing serious economic risks, particularly the kiwi industry in the Gioia Tauro plain, which is a vital source of local employment and income. A decisive meeting with Minister Matteo Salvini is scheduled for October 27 to evaluate the ministry's responses and determine if the strike will be extended.
