Calabria water safety warnings issued due to contamination and technical failures
Authorities in Calabria, Italy, have issued warnings regarding water safety following contamination and technical failures. In the Marina di Sant’Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio district, Mayor Nicola Ramogida signed an ordinance banning the use of public tap water for drinking, cooking, oral hygiene, washing dishes, and cleaning infant products. This precautionary measure follows microbiological tests conducted by ARPACAL that detected coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli in samples taken from a public fountain.
Simultaneously, in Reggio Calabria, the water utility Sorical reported potential water turbidity following a power failure at the Menta purification plant. While service is being restored, Sorical has recommended that residents temporarily limit water use for drinking and food preparation, restricting it to sanitary and toilet services until widespread sampling confirms the water meets safety standards.
