Caladium care: How to lift and store corms for winter

Caladiums are tropical foliage plants that function as perennials only in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 through 11. In colder regions, these plants must be lifted from the ground in the fall to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.

Gardeners should begin the lifting process when nighttime temperatures approach 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the foliage begins to fade or wither. In areas with very wet winters, even those in warmer zones, lifting the corms may be necessary to prevent rot caused by poor soil drainage.

The preservation process involves digging up the plants with a spade or fork, cutting the foliage back to a few inches above the corm, and allowing the corms to air dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area for three to seven days. Once the surfaces are dry to the touch, the corms can be stored for replanting in the spring.
