Calafell faces beach erosion and water turbidity concerns

The coastal municipality of Calafell is facing environmental and infrastructural challenges regarding its beaches and maritime promenade. Recent water turbidity in the area has been attributed to the opening of a local stream (riera) to the sea following heavy rains. This opening, intended to manage water flow, has caused sediment to wash into the sea, though officials note this is a natural process that also contributes to beach formation.

Simultaneously, Mayor Ramon Ferré has expressed concern over beach erosion and the potential loss of the municipal maritime promenade. Tensions have risen between the local government and state authorities regarding sand replenishment efforts. Previous attempts to transfer sand from the Coma-ruga port to Calafell's beaches were halted by the Generalitat to protect the nesting sites of the Kentish plover, a protected bird species. The Mayor has warned that if the state does not provide necessary sand contributions, the municipality will take action to ensure the promenade is preserved.
