Calama faces shortage of elderly care facilities

Organizations Cáritas Calama and Hogar de Cristo have warned of a critical deficit in land and infrastructure for elderly care in Calama, Chile. The current facilities are operating at maximum capacity, struggling to meet the needs of a growing elderly population facing abandonment and vulnerability.

Father David Vargas, vicar of Cáritas Calama, emphasized the urgent need for daycare centers and adequate spaces to support both seniors and their caregivers. Efforts are currently underway to coordinate with the Ministry of Social Development, Senama, and local municipal authorities to secure land and expand service coverage.
