Calama motorcyclist dies after collision with mining executive's vehicle

José Barrera Briones, a 45-year-old motorcyclist, has died following a serious traffic accident in Calama, Chile. The collision occurred on Saturday morning at the intersection of Ascotán Street and Balmaceda Avenue in Villa Ayquina.

Following the impact with a pickup truck, Barrera Briones was transported to the Hospital Regional de Antofagasta due to the severity of his injuries, where he later succumbed to them. The driver of the vehicle, a 50-year-old American citizen and high-ranking executive at a local mining company, was detained by Carabineros.

Barrera Briones, originally from Lima, Peru, had lived in Calama for approximately 15 years. He was a married father of a 14-year-old and operated a business in the construction sector. The Traffic Accident Investigation Section of Carabineros is currently conducting an inquiry to determine the exact circumstances and responsibilities regarding the collision.
