Calama municipality deploys emergency aid in Alto Loa

The Municipality of Calama has deployed emergency teams across the Alto Loa region to mitigate the impact of a severe weather front. Local authorities are assessing damage and providing aid to communities facing heavy snow and rain.

In Vega Chela, heavy snowfall has created a need for animal fodder, while Toconce requires heavy machinery to manage local conditions. In Turi and Ayquina, damaged access roads are being addressed in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works. Other areas, including Cupo, Caspana, Estación San Pedro, and Taira, are dealing with low temperatures and snow.

To protect residents, the municipality has distributed over 6,500 pieces of nylon to more than 6,000 families and more than 800 sandbags to prevent flooding. Mayor Eliecer Chamorro stated that the administration is working 24 hours a day, coordinating with the Army and the Directorate of Roads to monitor high-risk zones. Authorities are also maintaining continuous monitoring of the Loa River to prevent emergencies caused by rising water levels.
