Calama to implement new security deployment in city center and markets
Authorities in Calama are launching a new security deployment during the second half of the year, targeting the city center and open-air markets. The strategy aims to strengthen police inspections in areas identified through intelligence from Carabineros and the PDI (Investigative Police).
Beyond targeting irregular sales, the plan focuses on the logistics chains behind illegal commerce, including suppliers and transportation, to combat contraband and the illegal sale of medicines. Provincial Presidential Delegate Cristian Ramírez clarified that while Calama is among 50 prioritized municipalities, the move is intended to improve territorial control in areas with specific crime incidents rather than labeling the city as a high-crime zone.
Separately, recent criminal incidents in the city have involved the use of firearms. Reports indicate an elderly individual was shot during an assault and a vehicle was discovered with multiple ballistic impacts. Local police are investigating these cases as part of their ongoing efforts to address crime in the region.
