Calatafimi Segesta officially proclaimed ‘Civitas Mariae’

The City Council of Calatafimi Segesta has unanimously approved a resolution officially proclaiming the city as ‘Civitas Mariae’. This designation honors the community’s deep religious history and its devotion to the Madonna di Giubino.

The proclamation follows a decree from the Bishop of Trapani, Monsignor Pietro Maria Fragnelli, which integrated Calatafimi Segesta into the ‘Civitas Mariae’ circuit. The recognition is rooted in the historical significance of the Madonna di Giubino, who was crowned by the Vatican Chapter in 1779 and serves as a co-patron of the city alongside the Holy Crucifix.

Mayor Francesco Gruppuso stated that the act is more than a formality, as it formalizes an unbreakable bond between the community's identity and its faith. The devotion is maintained through local traditions, prayers, and folk songs such as the ‘Curunedda’ much of which has shaped the social fabric of the region for centuries.
