CalBank exits Bank of Ghana restrictions after GHS 1.164bn capital raise

CalBank has successfully exited regulatory restrictions imposed by the Bank of Ghana following a significant capital injection. The bank raised GHS 1.164 billion through a Rights Issue and Private Placement in November 2025, exceeding its original GHS 900 million target by approximately 29.4%.

The capital raise follows a period of financial instability in 2025, during which the bank’s capital adequacy ratio fell to negative 1.6%, triggering the Bank of Ghana’s Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) regime. This regime had previously limited the bank’s ability to expand its lending operations.

Following the capital injection, CalBank’s stated capital rose from GHS 545.8 million to GHS 1.4215 billion, and its capital adequacy ratio improved to 18.4%. Additionally, the bank’s non-performing loans ratio decreased from 26.5% to 8.5%, falling below the central bank’s 10% target. With these metrics restored, the Bank of Ghana has lifted the operational restrictions. The bank is now positioned to pursue lending growth, aided by Ghana’s commercial lending rates reaching a 25-year low of 15.94% in August 2026.
