Calcium functions and nutritional requirements for bone health
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and is vital for several physiological functions, including nerve impulses, muscle contraction, blood clotting, and hormone secretion. According to Dr. Katherine García of the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN), calcium is also essential for fertilization and the proper secretion of juices and hormones.
More than 99% of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, which act as a reservoir. Approximately 500 mg of the mineral moves in and out of the bones daily to maintain necessary levels in the blood.
Daily calcium requirements vary depending on life stages. Demand increases during childhood and puberty to support bone growth, and women require higher intake during menopause to mitigate increased bone loss.
