Kolkata stampede: SIT formed to probe fatal Durga Puja incident

The West Bengal government has established a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the October 17 stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata. The incident resulted in 19 deaths and 25 injuries.

Headed by retired Calcutta High Court Judge Anindita Roy Saraswati, the SIT is tasked with conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the causes of the crowd surge. The investigation will examine factors such as permissible footfall, entry and exit routes, CCTV footage, medical records, and the preparedness of organizers and emergency services. The team includes representatives from the Disaster Management and Civil Defence Department, the Special Task Force, the Home and Hill Affairs Department, and the National Disaster Response Force.

The SIT has been directed to submit its findings and recommendations to the state government within three months. The report is expected to shape future safety regulations and crowd management protocols for major community festivals starting in 2027. Meanwhile, the state government has announced compensation of Rs 25 lakh and a government job for a family member of each victim.
