Calcutta High Court directs Union Home Ministry to join Mahua Moitra security case
The Calcutta High Court has directed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to join a legal case regarding the security of Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra. Moitra, representing the Krishnanagar constituency, is seeking round-the-clock security personnel, alleging that current protections are insufficient to prevent repeated harassment and attacks.
Moitra has reported incidents of being harassed within her constituency, including instances where eggs were thrown at her and attacks while traveling in a vehicle. While the court previously ordered the deployment of two security guards within her constituency, Moitra’s counsel argued that the existing protection is inadequate, noting that a designated personal security officer (PSO) often does not accompany her.
In response, the state's Additional Advocate General stated that Moitra is currently provided with ‘X’ category security in accordance with the Union Home Ministry’s guidelines and the MP’s Yellow Book. The court has scheduled a subsequent hearing for December 2 to consider the Centre’s position on the matter.
