Calcutta High Court orders CBI to speed fresh probe in RG Kar rape‑murder case
On 6 August, the Calcutta High Court bench of Justices Shampa Sarkar and Teerthankar Ghosh directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to accelerate a fresh investigation into the rape and murder of a junior female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress of the CBI’s current probe and set a deadline for concrete results by the next hearing on 28 August.
The victim’s family, unhappy with the earlier CBI inquiry, had approached the court after the sole accused, civilian volunteer Sanjay Roy, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. The judges ordered that the new CBI team conduct a thorough re‑examination of all aspects of the crime, free from influence of the previous investigation.
