Calcutta High Court orders police protection for interfaith marriage in Howrah

The Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal Police to provide adequate security for an interfaith couple seeking to register their marriage in Howrah, West Bengal. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya emphasized that adult citizens have the right to choose their life partners and that religion cannot block a lawful marriage. The order follows threats and opposition from local residents, a third‑party group and political workers who have been harassing the couple and their families.

The court instructed the inspector‑in‑charge of Uluberia police station to file a compliance report within seven days of the ceremony, scheduled for July 29, and set a further hearing for August 10. Police officials, including Superintendent Amit Verma, confirmed that security measures are being implemented to prevent any untoward incident during the registration.
