Calcutta High Court petitioned over Jyotinagar water crisis
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Calcutta High Court regarding a severe water crisis in Jyotinagar Colony, located in the Cossipore area of north Kolkata. The petition, filed by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam, seeks the restoration of drinking water supplies to approximately 5,000 residents.
Residents of the decades-old settlement allege that municipal water connections have been non-functional for nearly three months. The shortage has reportedly caused significant difficulties for families regarding essential needs such as drinking and cooking. Additionally, residents have raised concerns over the disconnection of street lighting in parts of the colony, citing safety risks for pedestrians and elderly residents near the riverside road.
