Caldas da Rainha begins centenary celebrations of cityhood
The celebrations marking the centenary of Caldas da Rainha being elevated to city status have commenced and are scheduled to continue until August 2027. The program is being curated by visual artist João Paulo Feliciano, with the full schedule expected to be announced in October.
The festivities are organized around three narrative pillars: ‘City Revisited’, ‘City Lived’, and ‘City Imagined’. These axes aim to connect the city's history and memory with its contemporary reality and future prospects. Planned activities include exhibitions, performances, historical readings, and the publication or re-edition of out-of-print books related to the history of the city and the Leiria district.
Local officials noted that when Caldas da Rainha was granted city status on August 26, 1927, there were only 30 cities in the country. The program seeks to involve the community in celebrating its contemporary dynamics and institutional identity.
