Caldas education authorities implement El Niño preparedness measures

The education system of Colombia’s Caldas department has begun adopting preventative actions ahead of a projected El Niño‑related dry period expected in the second half of 2026. Officials warned that reduced rainfall and higher temperatures could threaten school water supplies, food‑program operations and increase fire risk, especially in rural areas.

Recommendations were issued to public and private school leaders, municipal mayors and local risk‑management committees to review water‑storage facilities, maintain tanks, promote water‑saving habits, and ensure continuity of the School Feeding Program. Schools are also urged to update risk‑management plans, strengthen fire‑prevention protocols, and reinforce emergency brigades for evacuation, first aid and logistical support.

The guidance emphasizes early identification of hazards, infrastructure checks of hydraulic networks and storage systems, and the promotion of self‑care practices among students and staff to mitigate heat‑related health effects.
