Calder Hall marks 70 years with demolition plans for Turbine Hall B

Sellafield Ltd has submitted plans to Cumberland Council for the demolition of Turbine Hall B at Calder Hall, near Seascale. This move is part of the Calder Land Clearance Project, which seeks to remove redundant structures to prepare the site for future use.

The announcement coincides with the 70th anniversary of Calder Hall, which was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 17, 1956. As the world’s first full-scale commercial nuclear power station to provide domestic electricity, the site holds significant historical importance. Although the station ceased energy production in 2003, decommissioning efforts continue, with Sellafield employing over 10,000 people at the site.

To mark the milestone, a week-long community exhibition is being held at The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven, inviting those with connections to the plant to share memorabilia.
