Cale Makar named top NHL defenseman amid contract talks

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar has been voted the number one defenseman in the NHL by analysts, marking the fifth consecutive year he has topped the rankings. Makar recorded 79 points in 75 games during the 2025-26 regular season, including 20 goals and 59 assists.

Discussions regarding Makar’s future with the Avalanche are intensifying as he enters the final season of his current contract. A resolution on a contract extension is expected soon, specifically before the September 15 deadline. Securing a deal by this date would allow Makar to sign an eight-year extension, whereas a new collective bargaining agreement would limit future extensions to seven years.

Avalanche General Manager Joe Sakic has stated that Makar will play his entire career in Colorado and has identified signing him as a top offseason priority. Makar is a two-time Norris Trophy winner and recently reached the 500-career-point milestone.
