Cale Makar named top NHL defenseman amid contract talks
Cale Makar has been ranked as the number one defenseman in the NHL by NHL Network, marking the second consecutive year he has held the top spot. The Colorado Avalanche star follows a strong 2025-26 season where he recorded 79 points in 75 games and was a Norris Trophy finalist for the sixth straight year.
In addition to his individual accolades, Makar is currently involved in contract negotiations with the Colorado Avalanche. While the team expresses confidence that a deal will be reached, insiders report that the primary point of discussion is the length of the contract term.
There is a specific deadline of September 15 for the Avalanche to secure an eight-year extension under current rules; after this date, a new collective bargaining agreement will limit extensions to seven years. Some reports suggest the new deal could be historic, potentially making Makar the first player to reach a $20 million average annual value.
