Calea Ferată din Moldova explores AI for passenger monitoring

Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM) is exploring the implementation of artificial intelligence to modernize its passenger services and enhance public safety. The state enterprise is considering an intelligent video analysis system designed to automatically count passengers, monitor occupancy levels, and optimize train schedules and carriage distribution.

The proposed technology would also monitor public spaces within trains to identify unusual or potentially dangerous situations, providing real-time alerts to responsible services. This digital initiative comes amid challenges regarding aging infrastructure; a freight train recently derailed on the Cahul – Prut 2 sector, an area where railway tracks have not undergone rehabilitation since 1956. While the company pursues high-tech monitoring solutions, government-funded capital repairs are underway to address the physical condition of the tracks.
