Calea Ferată din Moldova to reorganize into CFM-Infra
The state enterprise Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM) is undergoing a structural reorganization to become a joint-stock company named ‘CFM-Infra’. While authorities maintain that the railway infrastructure will remain under state control and that the move is not a privatization attempt, some political figures have expressed concerns that the reorganization is a precursor to privatization.
Regarding operational capacity, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea stated that CFM currently has only 12 functional locomotives. These are modern units manufactured in Kazakhstan, acquired with financial support from the European Union through a loan that the railway enterprise must repay.
Additionally, the Minister addressed the management of scrap metal, suggesting a shift from the current auction system to a more transparent stock exchange model to attract larger buyers. He also clarified that 20 old locomotives intended for scrap have not yet been transferred to Ukraine.
