Caleb Flynn murder trial begins in Ohio

The murder trial of former ‘American Idol’ contestant Caleb Flynn began on September 18 in Ohio. Prosecutors allege that Flynn orchestrated a calculated plot to kill his wife, Ashley Flynn, and staged the crime scene to look like a burglary.

During opening statements, Prosecutor Paul M. Watkins presented evidence from over 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and a woman with whom he was allegedly having a year-long affair. The state claims these messages demonstrate premeditation, including discussions on how to kill his wife without being caught. One message sent hours before the shooting allegedly read, ‘I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow, February 16, a day I’ll never forget.’

Ashley Flynn was found dead in the couple’s Tipp City home on February 16 from two gunshot wounds to the head. Caleb Flynn had reported an intruder to 911, but investigators found the home’s garage door open and the victim in the master bedroom while their two young children slept nearby.

Alleigha Botner, a former worship leader at the Christian Life Center in Dayton where Flynn was also involved, has been identified as a potential witness. Botner resigned from the church following Flynn’s arrest amid public speculation regarding her relationship with him, though prosecutors have not officially named her as the mistress in court.
