Caleb Williams' 'Iceman' Trademark Application Denied by USPTO

The United States Patent and Trademark Office refused the Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams' request to register the word “Iceman” as a trademark. The USPTO said the mark is “identical in appearance, sound and meaning” to a 1988 trademark held by LaCrosse Footwear for insulated boots, and that the similarity is likely to create the same commercial impression across the goods Williams listed, which include clothing, bags, water bottles and entertainment services. The denial does not stem from earlier applications by former athletes such as NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin. Williams retains the right to appeal the decision, and trademark counsel noted that while the boot trademark is narrow, other portions of his application might still be eligible for registration.

The case highlights the challenges athletes face when attempting to secure branding rights that overlap with existing product trademarks.
