Calenzano to Transform Former Eni Fuel Depot into 21 MW Renewable Energy Hub

On 9 December 2024 an explosion at the Eni fuel depot in Calenzano, Italy, killed five workers and injured around 27‑30 people. In response, the regional government of Tuscany, the municipality of Calenzano and Eni Industrial Evolution signed a protocol of intent to dismantle the depot and redevelop the site.

The agreement calls for a renewable‑energy hub comprising a 20‑21 MW photovoltaic plant and a 1 MW solar‑plus‑storage installation. Five percent of the hub’s revenue will be paid to the municipality for up to thirty years. Additional measures include upgrading the nearby Pratignone railway station, expanding local train services, and repurposing surrounding buildings for community use, completing the urban regeneration of the former industrial area.
