CALF cooperative denounces U.S. pressure over Huawei ties

The Neuquén-based electricity cooperative CALF has filed a complaint with the Argentine Chamber of Deputies following alleged pressure from the United States Embassy regarding its commercial relationship with the Chinese firm Huawei.

According to cooperative officials, a commercial attaché from the U.S. delegation warned the company’s technology manager that maintaining ties with Huawei could result in the revocation of visas for the cooperative’s leadership. The U.S. Embassy reportedly confirmed in writing that these messages “reflect faithfully the policy of the United States.”

CALF’s general secretary, Yenny Fonfach, characterized the actions as an “intrusion” into the autonomy of the cooperative, asserting their right to choose suppliers freely. The cooperative has requested intervention from the Argentine Foreign Ministry to defend its independence. Representatives from CALF are scheduled to meet with U.S. diplomats in Buenos Aires to seek clarification and resume dialogue.
