Calf muscle function linked to lower mortality risk
Research indicates that the calf muscles act as a ‘second heart’ by assisting blood circulation. When calf muscles contract during activities like walking or heel raises, they compress veins to push blood upward toward the heart, overcoming gravity and low venous pressure.
Studies conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic have linked impaired calf pump function to significantly higher mortality rates. In one 10-year study, individuals with impaired calf pump function faced a 17.5% mortality risk, compared to 5.9% for those with normal function. Another study involving approximately 6,000 participants found that those with the weakest pump function had more than double the death risk of those with strong function.
To maintain this vital function, experts recommend regular physical activities such as walking, running, and strength training. For individuals who must remain seated for long periods, such as those with diabetes, simple movements like repeatedly lifting the heels while keeping toes on the floor can help improve circulation and may assist in regulating blood glucose and fat metabolism.
