A diplomatic dispute has emerged between the United States and China following allegations that the U.S. Embassy in Argentina pressured the CALF electric cooperative to cancel a contract with Huawei. According to reports, a U.S. official contacted a CALF manager via WhatsApp, warning that the U.S. government is implementing policies to restrict or revoke visas for executives involved in expanding Huawei's operations in Argentina.

U.S. Ambassador Peter Lamelas defended the stance, characterizing the actions as "private diplomatic management" intended to protect U.S. national security interests. Washington views Huawei's presence in the Neuquén province—home to the strategic Vaca Muerta shale oil fields—as a potential threat to critical infrastructure.

The Chinese Embassy strongly condemned the move, calling it "visa blackmail" and an infringement on Argentine sovereignty. Beijing argued that Argentina has the right to choose its own technology providers and accused the U.S. of using a generalized concept of national security to conduct geopolitical maneuvers.

This incident occurred shortly after Argentina renewed a $19 billion five-year currency swap agreement with China. The CALF cooperative has maintained that its decision to use Huawei was based on technical and economic criteria regarding fiber optic expansion for local homes and oil firms.
