Calf rescued by helicopter on Monte Baldo after thunderstorm

On 1 August, a roughly 200‑kg calf slipped down a steep slope near Malga Vignolet on Monte Baldo after being startled by thunder and lightning. The animal could not move on its own, prompting a complex rescue. Volunteer firefighters from Avio and the permanent fire brigade from Trento reached the site on foot because the terrain was inaccessible to vehicles. A helicopter launched from Trento was used to air‑lift rescue equipment. A veterinarian on‑site sedated the calf, which was then secured in a net and lowered to a flatter area where ground crews could transport it. The operation began around 10:30 a.m. and concluded late in the afternoon, after several hours of coordinated effort, and the calf was returned to its owner.
