Calgary breaks ground on $43-million Symons Valley Centre Library
Construction has officially begun on the $43-million Symons Valley Centre Library in the Sage Hill community of northwest Calgary. The project aims to address a shortage of amenities in the city’s rapidly growing outskirts.
The new 15,000-square-foot facility will include parking and a multi-modal street. It is designed to replace the current Sage Hill library, a 1,700-square-foot temporary space that opened in 2017. Calgary Public Library CEO Sarah Meilleur noted that the current branch is heavily utilized, having circulated over 180,000 books last year.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-2028. Local Ward 2 Councillor Jennifer Wyness highlighted the importance of the development, noting that growing suburban communities like Sage Hill, Kincora, Sherwood, Nolan Hill, and Evanston require improved services such as transit and libraries to meet population growth.
