Calgary businesses face disruption after Bowness water main break

Businesses in the Bowness area of Calgary are facing significant disruptions following a water main break and the subsequent formation of a sinkhole on Bowness Road. The rupture occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday, impacting water distribution to approximately 20 businesses between 62nd and 63rd Street N.W.

While crews completed a minor repair on the 250 mm water distribution main on Sunday, a second leak developed near the original site once water pressure was restored. City officials stated that crews returned to the site to replace a section of the main, with expectations to fully restore water service by the end of the day.

Local business owners have reported financial losses due to closures and wasted inventory. The Mainstreet Bowness Business Improvement Area noted that this is a recurring issue, following a similar pipe rupture in April. Even businesses not directly dependent on water services have reported decreased foot traffic and access issues due to ongoing construction and street disruptions.
