Calgary City Council debates 20% increase to ward office budgets

The City of Calgary has recommended a 20 percent boost to each ward office budget to address staffing pressures, inflation and rapid population growth. Currently each councillor’s ward receives about $370,000, a total of roughly $5.2 million for all wards. A city‑conducted survey found 70 percent of councillors say the existing budget is insufficient and 80 percent favour an increase.

Supporters such as Ward 9 Councillor Harrison Clark argue the extra funds would improve representation for their over‑100,000 constituents. Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the proposed rise is steep and wants clear value before backing it, while also exploring alternatives like adding more wards. Councillor Dan McLean opposes the increase, calling it hypocritical for councillors to seek higher spending while urging the administration to cut costs elsewhere. The council is set to vote on the recommendation later this evening.
