Calgary city council votes to affirm position within Canada

Calgary city council has voted 14–1 to affirm the city’s position as a vital part of both Alberta and Canada. The motion, introduced by Mayor Jeromy Farkas, comes ahead of an Alberta referendum scheduled for October 19, which will ask voters whether the province should remain part of Canada or begin the process toward potential independence.

The resolution is not constitutionally binding but focuses on the economic and municipal risks associated with separation. Council members noted that independence could jeopardize federal funding for essential services, including public transit, housing, and infrastructure. Mayor Farkas described the potential consequences of separation as potentially “the most disastrous consequence ever that the city has ever experienced.”

Economic concerns are echoed by local business interests; a survey by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce indicated that nearly half of its members would consider relocating if the formal separation process began. Additionally, a University of Calgary School of Public Policy report estimated that the initial five years of an independent Alberta could require between $50 billion and $170 billion in costs.
