Calgary committee approves surface route for Green Line LRT
The Calgary Executive Committee has voted 12-1 to endorse a surface-level alignment for the Green Line LRT through the city’s downtown core. The selected route will run along 10 Avenue S.W. and conclude at a station located between 1 and 2 Street S.W.
This decision follows a two-year period of evaluating various alignments. Of the three shortlisted options, the chosen surface route was the only one that fits within the project’s current budget. Other proposed options, which included elevated tracks, were rejected due to significant funding gaps. One elevated option would have required $1 billion more than available funds, while another would have exceeded the budget by $500 million.
Mayor Jeromy Farkas expressed support for the decision, noting that delaying the project further would likely lead to increased costs. Project officials indicated that 22 different downtown alignments had been studied between 2016 and 2024.
