Calgary Flames face roster shifts amid slow season start

The Calgary Flames have struggled at the start of the 2026–27 NHL season, holding a 1–5–0 record. Amidst scoring difficulties, rookie Aydar Suniev has emerged as a bright spot, maintaining a point-per-game pace. Following the decision to place Connor Zary on waivers, Suniev was recalled from the Calgary Wranglers and has since moved to the top line, recording two goals and three points in three games.

In related roster news, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that the Vancouver Canucks have expressed interest in acquiring forward Connor Zary. Zary was recently assigned to the American Hockey League after clearing waivers. While no immediate trade is expected due to salary retention complexities, the divisional rival remains a potential suitor for the forward.
