Calgary Mayor accuses Alberta government of illegal municipal overreach

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has accused the Alberta provincial government of illegal overreach following recent decisions regarding municipal authority. Farkas argued in a social media video that the province's actions undermine the legal right of citizens to a fair public hearing.

The dispute follows a decision by Premier Danielle Smith’s government to roll back certain zoning rules in Edmonton. Smith stated the province reversed the 2024 zoning bylaw changes because the federal government had influenced the city’s rules by offering millions in funding to facilitate multi-unit housing in established neighborhoods, a move Smith characterized as a bribe.

Farkas expressed concern that provincial interventions could bypass the wishes of residents and local politicians. He cited high court rulings suggesting that councillors should not decide on matters under public hearing until after participants have been heard, questioning the utility of public hearings if the Premier has already predetermined the outcome.
