Calgary Opera replaces singer after Palestinian flag protest
Calgary Opera has removed bass singer Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega from the production of “Tosca” following an unauthorized political demonstration. During the curtain call of the opening night performance on October 16, Sanchez-Ortega, a member of the McPhee Artist Development program, displayed a Palestinian flag.
The company stated that the action was “unexpected and unauthorized” and noted that individual political protests contravene company policy. Calgary Opera expressed regret for any discomfort or distress the incident may have caused the audience, cast, and crew, emphasizing their commitment to providing a respectful environment for all.
The role of Angelotti will be performed by another artist for the remaining scheduled performances. The decision was commended by the Calgary Jewish Federation and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), who praised the institution for its swift enforcement of policies regarding unauthorized protests in shared community spaces.
