Calgary police charge two men in hate-motivated assault

Two men have been charged with assault causing bodily harm following a hate-motivated incident in Calgary this past July. According to the Calgary Police Service, the assault occurred on July 2 near a restaurant on Macleod Trail.

Investigators report that while a woman was using a portable washroom, two men approached and tipped the unit over. The impact caused the door to slam against the pavement, trapping the woman inside. Witnesses assisted in freeing her before police were called.

The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment after being exposed to toxic chemicals and waste matter, though she has since made a full recovery. The Calgary Police Hate Crime Prevention Team investigated the matter, concluding that hate motivation was a factor based on comments made by the suspects regarding the victim's gender and ethnicity.

Tyson David Cann, 24, of Calgary, and Fynn Storm Ferrier, 24, of Kimberley, British Columbia, face the charges. While hate motivation is not a formal charge, police noted that if a judge determines hate played a role, it can serve as an aggravating factor during sentencing.
