Calgary boy Parker Wells found dead, spurring autism alert reform
On July 16, 2026 an 11‑year‑old autistic, non‑verbal boy named Parker Wells disappeared from his daycare in Calgary. After a two‑week search involving hundreds of police officers and volunteers, his body was discovered on July 29 in a maze of water pipes beneath Deerfoot Trail, about four kilometres from where he was last seen.
An Amber Alert was issued as a special exemption on the second day of the search. The tragedy prompted Conservative MP Mike Lake and party leader Pierre Poilievre to write to Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski, urging a Canada‑wide public‑alert system for vulnerable children. Autism Canada notes that nearly half of children with autism are prone to wandering. The city responded with memorials, lowered flags, and lit the Calgary Tower blue. A GoFundMe campaign raised close to $100,000 for the family.
