Cali begins demolishing buildings damaged by August earthquake

The city of Cali has begun demolishing buildings damaged by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck central and western Colombia on August 10. Local authorities have identified 60 structures for demolition, with 36 already approved and 24 awaiting authorization. Currently, more than 10 work fronts are active across the city to manage these high-risk structures.

Mayor Alejandro Eder reported that engineering teams have inspected over 4,000 of the 14,000 properties slated for evaluation. Among the buildings identified for intervention are Cali Express, D’Corpus, Metrópolis Plaza, Arábico, Cotranal, Archinié, and Coral. The Laureles building is expected to be demolished via implosion, a different method than the heavy machinery being used for other sites.

The administration is also focusing on reconstruction and social support. Over 9,000 prioritized families have received economic aid, and the city aims to begin new housing projects in the affected areas by December.
