Cali sports authorities work to restore facilities after earthquake
One month after the earthquake on August 10, 2026, sports authorities in Cali are working to restore normalcy to regional athletic activities. While four major sports units remain closed, officials have announced the start of repairs in specific areas to ensure service can resume.
Alexander Camacho, Cali’s Secretary of Sports, noted that certain facilities like the velodrome have suffered significant damage, while others have experienced partial impact. The Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium remains functional. Currently, 47 high-performance venues are undergoing evaluation by insurers to determine repair timelines.
In the regional football sector, Oweimar Giraldo, president of the Valle del Cauca Football League, reported that while seven employees faced structural issues due to the quake, there were no human fatalities. The league is currently operating from improvised locations as it works to resume competitions across the department.
