Cali to hold candlelight vigil for earthquake victims
The city of Cali and the Valle del Cauca region will hold an interreligious prayer service and candlelight vigil this Friday, August 21, to honor the victims of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10.
The event, organized by the Cali Mayor's Office and local religious sectors, is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the San Juan Pablo II Sanctuary in the Valle de Lili sector. At 7:00 p.m., a collective lighting of candles will take place as a symbol of solidarity, hope, and remembrance for those lost.
Authorities intend for the ceremony to mark a transition toward the reconstruction phase for the region. The vigil aims to unite various religious confessions and citizens in a collective gesture of support for affected families. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be broadcast by Telepacífico, and citizens are encouraged to light candles from their homes.
