Calibre has released version 9.14 of its open-source e-book management software, featuring a new AI-powered book cover generator. This tool allows users to create custom covers by selecting specific visual styles, such as science fiction, romance, or pulp fiction, or by providing their own descriptions.

To use the feature, users must configure an image-generation provider via an API key. The update expands supported AI services to include Anthropic and Grok backends, while removing the GitHub backend due to the discontinuation of its service. Other supported providers include Google AI, OpenAI, and OpenRouter.

Beyond the AI integration, version 9.14 includes several usability improvements and critical security patches. These include fixes for arbitrary file-write vulnerabilities and remote code execution flaws within the Content Server, as well as a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the legacy book details page. Additional updates include improved tag searching that ignores accents and a fix for a long-standing Linux bug regarding clickable links in dialog boxes.
